The present analysis argues that in Romanian sociology has been traditionally oriented toward studying and serving the powers that be and the state. After its neo-traditional (1918-1940) and totalitarian experiences (1940-1990), both dominated by national or political imperatives, Romanian sociology should rethink its mission and social vocation. It should pay much more attention to the social developments impelled by globalization and by the individualist imperatives of modern culture. Dacă răspunsul este afirmativ, atunci ar trebui să vedem care sunt raporturile dintre ştiinţele sociale şi contextele în care ele funcţionează, ştiind că aceste contexte sunt diferite de momentul în care respectivele ştiinţe au apărut. Mai precis, problema care se pune vizează modul în care sociologia îşi defineşte astăzi rostul şi cum îşi asumă acest rost, în acord cu vocaţia sa umanistă.
